Packed Moving Boxes

Moving Checklist & Tips

Congratulations on your new home! Planning a move can be overwhelming, even the thought of putting together a checklist in order to get organized can seem daunting, but the good news is, Jenni has got you covered!

THE OBVIOUS

You don't need to be told that you will need packing supplies, right? Boxes, bubble wrap, tape, the usual. Unless your movers are handling all the packing, of course.

 ! Good Tip Alert !

- Color code room labels with contents for the boxes so you don’t go crazy looking for things!

WHAT'S MOVING, WHAT'S NOT

Figure out what you're taking and what is getting thrown out, sold, or donated before you move. This is the perfect time to do that "spring cleaning" you've been putting off for so long.

! Good Tip Alert !

- Separate valuables, such as jewelry, and take them with you.

- Pack a suitcase for 2-3 days with essentials

MAIL FORWARDING

Once you know your move date, you can set up your new change of address and schedule when to have your mail forwarded to your new home.

Standard Forward Mail | USPS

They’ll even send you fun coupons for places like Wayfair and Home Depot!

ADDRESS UPDATES

- Update your car and homeowners' insurance

- Set up power/water for new address, cancel for your current one as well

- Address change on your driver’s license

- Change billing address for credit cards and other accounts

- Voter registration update

- Get any prescriptions changed to your new pharmacy

CANCELLATIONS

As soon as your closing date is confirmed, you can start on these!

- Recurring landscaping

- Meal delivery services

- Housekeeping

- Gym membership (unless you’re transferring to the same gym in a new area)

MISCELLANEOUS

- Let your friends and family know your new address so you don’t miss out on those adorable holiday cards!

- Have cash so you can tip the movers. It’s a lot of work! Standard tipping practice is about $40-$100 per mover.

- If you have time before your stuff gets moved into your new home, schedule a cleaning.

- Get locks changed on the new house and get extra keys made.

- It’s nice to be nice! Clean the place you are leaving. Spackle holes, leave paint, any warranty info or receipts you have for appliances.

EXTRA TIPS!

  • Apply for a Homestead exemption! If you already have one, ask Jenni about portability.

  • Set up FPL & take closing paperwork to your local water department to activate.

  • Schedule current utilities to be shut off the day AFTER you move.
